What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems, published by the International Organization for Standardization. It sets requirements for identifying hazards, controlling risk, and involving workers directly in safety decisions, rather than leaving compliance to a single officer working from a spreadsheet.

The standard replaced OHSAS 18001 in 2018 and shares its High-Level Structure with ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environment), which is why many organisations pursue all three together as Triple Certification.

Safe Work Australia's maximum penalty for a Category 1 WHS offence reached $11,839,000 for a body corporate as at 1 July 2025. Certification is no longer optional for businesses tendering on major projects or managing regulatory risk at scale.
